About the Department

PG & RESEARCH DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY

Established in 1940, the PG and Research Department of Chemistry at Pachaiyappa’s College has evolved into a distinguished centre for teaching and research in chemical sciences. Equipped with modern laboratories, ICT-enabled learning spaces such as Alchemy Hall, and a well-stocked library with over 7,500 volumes, the department offers comprehensive undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes. It has produced more than 100 Ph.D. and 500 M.Phil. scholars, consistently achieving university ranks and gold medals. With a strong vision of academic excellence, innovation, and inclusivity, the department focuses on preparing students for competitive examinations, fostering industry collaboration, and promoting interdisciplinary research.

The department has a rich legacy of academic leadership, beginning with Prof. P. Bhaskara Panicker and continuing through successive heads who have contributed to its sustained growth. A major milestone was the establishment of the PG and Research Block with UGC support, inaugurated in 1962 by Chief Minister K. Kamaraj. The department is well equipped with advanced infrastructure, including state-of-the-art laboratories and instrumentation facilities such as colorimeters, furnaces, pH meters, rotary evaporators, and visible light reactors. Active research areas include organic synthesis, materials chemistry, and green chemistry, supported by funded projects and publications in reputed journals. Through seminars, workshops, industrial visits, and research collaborations, the department fosters academic excellence and innovation, contributing meaningfully to the advancement of chemical sciences and societal development.
