Established in 1940 under the visionary leadership of Prof. R. N. Selvam, the PG and Research Department of Physics at Pachaiyappa’s College stands as a distinguished centre of scientific excellence in Chennai. The department’s legacy is enriched by the historic visit of Nobel Laureate Sir C. V. Raman, which continues to inspire generations of physicists. Elevated to a postgraduate department in 1979 and initiating formal research programmes in 1991, the department has consistently produced University of Madras rank holders and gold medallists. With a strong commitment to bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, the department imparts quality education that integrates technical expertise with essential life skills, preparing students to excel in academia, research, and industry.
The department is supported by a team of highly qualified faculty members, all recognized research supervisors, who have collectively guided over 100 Ph.D. scholars, with several researchers currently pursuing advanced studies. The department has a remarkable academic contribution with extensive publications in reputed national and international journals, along with several textbooks benefiting the student community. Milestones such as the conferment of a D.Sc. to former Head Dr. S. Gunasekaran and numerous faculty awards reflect its academic excellence. Faculty members actively contribute as editors, evaluators, and members of academic bodies at various universities. The department also takes pride in its service to society through curriculum development and authorship of textbooks for the Government of Tamil Nadu. By organizing international conferences, seminars, and symposiums, the department continues to remain a vibrant hub of scientific research and innovation.
