Department of English

Established in 1956, the PG and Research Department of English at Pachaiyappa’s College has evolved into a distinguished centre for teaching and research in English studies. From its inception, the department has been committed to imparting quality education while fostering intellectual growth, ethical values, and a passion for literature and language. With a strong academic foundation, the department continues to serve as a torchbearer of knowledge through English in this prestigious institution. It is supported by a team of dedicated and experienced faculty members and a well-equipped departmental library housing a rich collection of books, including rare and valuable works by eminent scholars.

The department actively promotes literary and academic engagement through a variety of programmes and events. It has been organizing the Chennai Literary Festival since 2014 in collaboration with the Chennai Literary Association and the University of Madras. Regular academic activities include literary association events, special lectures by distinguished scholars, national webinars, workshops on English language teaching, technical writing, and theatre arts, as well as intercollegiate competitions such as the “Pachaiyappa’s Lit Quiz.” Through these initiatives, the department fosters creativity, critical thinking, and communication skills among students, preparing them for diverse academic and professional pursuits.
