Department of Philosophy

Established with a distinguished legacy tracing back to 1889, when Pachaiyappa’s College was elevated to a Grade I institution, the PG and Research Department of Philosophy has been a centre of intellectual excellence for over a century. Philosophy was formally introduced in 1891 under the title Mental and Moral Science as part of the Bachelor of Arts programme, marking the beginning of structured philosophical education in the institution. In the same year, Mr. A. G. Cooper, M.A., was appointed as the first Professor. Over the years, the department has evolved into a prominent centre for teaching and research, offering programmes that foster critical thinking, ethical awareness, and rigorous intellectual inquiry.
