About the Department

PG & RESEARCH DEPARTMENT OF ZOOLOGY

Established in 1940 with the introduction of Zoology at the Intermediate level, the Department of Zoology at Pachaiyappa’s College has developed a rich legacy of academic excellence and research spanning over eight decades. The department expanded its academic programmes with the introduction of the B.Sc. course in 1944, followed by the M.Sc. programme in 1958, becoming the first science department in the college to attain postgraduate status. Under the leadership of eminent academicians such as Prof. K. Veerabadra Rao, Prof. A. J. Bonnel, and Prof. J. P. Balasingh, the department strengthened its academic foundation and research orientation. A major milestone was the inauguration of the Postgraduate block in 1959 by Dr. A. Lakshmanaswamy Mudaliar, then Vice-Chancellor of the University of Madras. The department further expanded its research activities with the introduction of M.Phil. in 1977 and Ph.D. programmes in 1982, producing a significant number of research scholars.

Over the years, the department has been guided by distinguished Heads, contributing to its steady growth in teaching, research, and infrastructure. Notable developments include the establishment of an Animal Museum through UGC funding and the introduction of advanced programmes such as B.Sc. Advanced Zoology and Biotechnology. The department celebrated its Platinum Jubilee (1940–2015), marking 75 years of academic excellence. At present, the department emphasizes a balanced approach between theoretical knowledge and practical exposure through field visits, educational tours, and research-based learning. Active research areas include Aquaculture, Toxicology, Phytotherapy, Cancer Biology, and Entomology. With a strong commitment to academic excellence, research innovation, and student development, the department continues to contribute significantly to the advancement of biological sciences.
