DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION

From the year 1842 to 1872 the Principals of Pachaiyappa's Institution tried to provide sporting facilities and activities to their students. They were not very successful, because no ground was available for conducting sports at Esplanade. The grounds were intended for military purposes. In 1872 the government revised its opinion and gave the ground for sports activities and also permitted to engage the services of Madras Army to coach students in athletics and other sports. The services of Army Men could not be rendered continuously to the students as the regiments had to be moved from place to place frequently.

In 1881 the grounds in Esplanade had been acquired for Sports and had excellent gymnasium was constructed during the Presidentship of Shri P. Ranganatha Mudaliar (1882-1891).

A trained Physical Instructor was appointed. The gymnasium became very live and also provided facilities for playing Cricket and Tennis.

During 1887 Pachaiyappa's College won the coveted Branti Hutchison Cricket Trophy by defeating Central College Mangalore, Mysore Maharajas College and The Madras Christian College. The facilities for athletics and sports were improved thereon.

In 1928 Rao Bahadur K. Chinnathambi Pillai became the Pricipal. He made Physical Education compulsory for the Intermediate Classes. A qualified Physical Director was appointed. In 1940 Thiru J.S.Rao a fully qualified Physical Director was appointed, he served upto 1970. Thiru K.Seenivasagam was appointed during the year 1970 as Assistant to Thiru S. Rao and was elevated as Physical Director and served upto May 1999. Thiru S. Swamikannu also served as Physical Director from 1975 to 1981. Dr.K.S. Sridhar joined during June 1999 and is serving as Director of Physical Education.

The high standards set by our Sportsmen since the inception of the Deparunent, has been elevated at the Inter University, State, National and International levels.The college Hockey team won the University of Madras Champions title for 17 years.

The college Cricket team won the University of Madras Champions title for 2 years (1999-2000 and 2017-2018) and secured Runner up position for 3 years.

The college Kabaddi team won the University of Madras Champions title for 4 years (2003-2004, 2004-2005, 2008-2009 and 2010-2011) and secured Runner up position for 4 years.

The college Volleyball team won the University of Madras Champions title for 1 year (1997-1998) and secured Runner up position for 1 year.

The college Football team secured runner up position in the University of Madras Championship for 7 years.

The college Ball Badminton team secured Runner up position in the University of Madras Championship for 3 years during the academic years.

All the above achievements were made between 1995 and 2018
