Pachaiyappas College was established from the wealth earned through the great philonthereptist Vallal Pachaiyappa Mudaliyar: According to his 'WILL this property should be used for religious bounties and Sanskrit learning. Because of the word 'Learning' they have taken the 'WILL to the court and started educational institutions. They have started Sanskrit teaching at primary level and then up to college level. We have information that there was a Sanskrit school running at Chidambaram at the beginning. Pachaiyappa Mudaliyar has dedicated his wealth for the temples of South India.

As regards Department of Sanskrit had great Scholars like Sri Lakshmana Suri, Sri Ananathachar of Kerala, Sri Varadachari, Sri Shanmukha Mudaliyar of Teynampet. Chennai and Sri R. Venkoba Rao of Chennai have contributed for the cause of Sanskrit Literature in the form of books. A bridgement of Sanskrit works, editing and publishing. Sri Shanmukha Mudaliyar had served in the Department for more than 30 years. He was a great scholar in Sanskrit and Tamil. He was an exponant in Saiva Agamas and Saiva Siddhantha. During his period he authored the syllabi for PUC students in Sanskrit. During his period many Sanskrit dramas were enacted in Pachaiyappas College, Chennai.

During the tenure of Prof. Shanmukha Mudaliyar. Sri R. venkoba Rao was appointed as a tutor in Sanskrit department and succeeded as professor and HOD. He continued his literary activities as like his predecessors. Sri R.Venkoba Rao is an eruclite scholar in Rig Veda and Yajur Veda. He has attended many Vedic conferences and seminars in Tamil Nadu. Andhra, Karnataka and New Delhi. He was an Lunar Almonac designer. He was also the recipient of Samskrutha Prachara Chathura and Veda Vedantha Paranagtha. After his retirement in the year 2000, till date Sanskrit coaching and learning activities are taking place in Sanskrit department in an effective manner.
